PS5 Confirmed by Sony Executive: 2018? 2019? 2020?

PS5 ConfirmedIf the announcement of the PS4 Pro had you worried about the future of PlayStation, and ultimately a PS5, it’s time to put your fears to rest. Sony Interactive Entertainment America boss, Shawn Layden, has confirmed that PS4 Pro won’t be the last we see of the PlayStation brand.

Furthermore, new rumors are pointing to a possible 2018 release date for the PS5. While PS4 Pro is going to ease the market into 4K, it’s clear that it’s simply a means to an end. Let’s find out what Sony’s planning, shall we?

Sony Exec: “There Will Be More PlayStations.”

Sony gave us all a collective heart attack when President Shuhei Yoshida said the PS5 is an “if,” signifying that Sony was unsure of the PS5’s future. Thankfully, we can put those rumors to rest. After the PlayStation Meeting, The Verge caught up with Shawn Layden, head of SIEA and the PlayStation Worldwide Studios group.

During the interview, Shawn was asked about future PlayStations in the wake of this new announcement. Specifically he was asked if the next step is a PS5. Here’s his response:

“Right now we were concentrating on how do we iterate within this PS4 life cycle. The technology and improvements behind PS4 Plus are our way of articulating where we think the market wants to go. People will want to have greater fidelity of images and graphics. Where we go from there, we’re going to have to wait and see. It’s our first time innovating within the life cycle, so I’m not exactly sure what impact that will have on our plan going forward. But there will be more PlayStations.”

That right there is enough to confirm we’ll see a PS5 at some point in the future. The showcase at the PlayStation Meeting for the PS4 Pro didn’t appear to be a massive upgrade, so the biggest question about the PS5 will be how it pushes the boundaries of graphics and gameplay.

Will the next PlayStation be another small step forward, an iteration as it were? Or, will we see a generational leap worthy of the name “PS5?” That is certainly the question, but PlayStation boss, Andrew House, has said in the past that he’s not too keen on shortening the console lifecycle.
In an interview prior to E3 2016 with The Guardian, House made it clear that PS4 Pro isn’t a generational leap, but he also cautioned against shortening life cycles:

”I’m not suggesting we want to bring the games industry to an 18-month-two-year cycle because then you would lose an awful lot of the fixed platform benefits we’ve enjoyed that allow for these really great leaps in game experience.

However, we did think there was an opportunity to reflect on the traditional lifecycle, and on 4K technology, and say maybe there’s an opportunity, within the course of a normal lifecycle to offer something else. Something a little bit better, for a segment of the market that feels that this is important.”

So, it’s fair to say that the PS5 will offer this generational leap we’re looking for in a brand new generation of consoles. Now the only question remaining, is when will we see it?

New Rumors Point to a 2018 Release Date For PS5

It’s fair to say we won’t see the PS5 in the next year. Andrew House has also said that this will be the PlayStation lineup for a “substantial period of time.” That being said, the PS4 Pro will be outclassed quickly in the next few years, especially if Microsoft’s claims that Project Scorpio will be more powerful are to be believed.

This would push Sony into releasing the PS5 to keep up with the times. Of course, a 2018 date is pure speculation at this point. That being said, it’s a theory being supported by Wall Street Journal’s Takashi Mochizuki via his Twitter.

The prediction comes from analyst Damian Thong who is famous for accurately predicting the PS4 Pro and Slim before they were announced. It’s not much to go on yet, but it’s something to think about. It would make sense, given the roadmap laid out by Microsoft for Scorpio.

What do you think? Would you like to see the PS5 in 2018? Let us know in the comments!

Much better Graphics and games(Uncharted 4&Uncharted remastered)

The PS4 owned this last Console war. With the number one game of all time. Uncharted 4 and the remastered Uncharted. Now that PlayStation knows the Xbox Scorpio Specs that gives PlayStation what to do to kick another generation console cycle. I loved the Xbox and XBOX one but once PlayStation started pumping out the Sony Games they took off with the gold. I will buy the new PS5 and Also the XBOX Scorpio because I love them both I just hope they kick them off with Great games, Both consoles had a slow start but once they started to get a handle on the development they got the starting line start. PS5 better have a Uncharted 5 or a game like it because it was long and harder with more content you get the harder you set the difficulty which I loved that. I cant wait for their releases. Im so excited for the VR - Xbox was talking about because the PS VR was sub par. but who needs it when you have the great library of games. Go Microsoft and Sony. I wish you the best. JZ Gaming Console lover. PC negative fan.

Playstation 5

I would love to see the ps5 in 2018 cause I've always been a Playstation fan since 2008 and that why I'm waiting for the ps5 in 2018

Yes! I will buy the PS5 if it comes out in 2018! If Sony waits too long, I will switch to Xbox because I have a 4K HDR TV and am looking to utilize the full extent of my hardware. The PS4 Pro is great, and I will most likely buy one, but for Sony to stay competitive, they need to release a next gen console NO LATER than 2018 or else other companies like Steam and NVIDIA will fill the void. Sony must be the one who fills the void, not Steam, NIVIDIA, Wii or any other console company looking to take advantage of a void. FILL THE SPACE SONY! You will not be disappointed that you did!

PS is gonna be like PS4 there is not point of buying it.

If the PS5 comes in 2018 I will definitely buy it

the PS5 comes in 2018 because they are can to do new genartion with 4k and photo realistic

Ps5 8k resolution, backwards compatibility, realistic graphics.should happen

8K? You can forget the PS5

8K? You can forget the PS5 then! PS7 maybe. But thats going to be a long long time

That's spot on :-)

i think its great to move to a ps5 but it must have good oponions like 4k as standards in the console , and make version like 1 tb and 2 tb not make upgrated versions whole time that makes more smallers than biggers steps like ps4 pro and ps4 make a big ps5 whit 4k gaming streaming and evrything and let peapmr play 5 years on a console and then make a whole new its a better plan than make thousands of playstation if u know what i lean greetings still love playstation

Ps5 release

To be honest, it's always cool to see a leap forward in technology, and it sparks my interest what Sony will come up with next, and I understand they want to keep up with the times with the 4K now being out, but, it actually pisses me off. PS4 isn't really that old. The fact that I spent all that money for ps4 not really that long ago, makes it seem insane that they would be comming out with another system already. I personally thought it would be at least a few more years. Andrew DuQuesnay

not for me the next consoles sony xbox and nintendo ! i wait last life promo for play games bye! ( or emulation;) )

They are already coming out with 64 Terabyte Storage. Which will be needed on te new consoles PS5 and Scorpio.

I would like see it in 2017 since the new Xbox comes out then.

Im chopping at the bit for higher resolutions / 4K native @ 60 FPS ..or better. Yet it seems by the time sony actually releases their latest console ...the tech is already dated . the non backwards compatibility of latest 2 systems almost made me jump to xbox (just a thought ) maybe have 2 systems at launch PS5 and PS5 HYPER ...with higher price tag but fully maxed boutique power and speed

Tech guy

8k TV were on display at Ces 2015, 2016 and 2017 so it is possible that we may see an 8k PS5 if 8k tv were to release before PS5. I would say that it is too early to release PS5 at 2018 because VR gaming needs an improvement and not many people have 4k TV in their homes yet. This will also allow time for game developer to make an ultimate game making software (better than what naughtdog use or better than unreal engine) that would make games looks more better than ps4 pro 4k games. And other more cool technology like hdr might come into PS5 if we buy enough time for the game developer enough time. Who knew HDR would ever exist and be this good right.

Will buy the PS5

I bought the original PS4, then, I saw PS4 slim and then, PS4 Pro. I want to buy the PS4 pro but cannot sell the original PS4. A big graphic upgrade but not necessary. When PS5 comes out, I will buy but not sure you will release another PS5 slum and then PS5 Pro. I may be regret that I buy the PS5 if there will be a Pro version coming out shortly after that.

Sony rocks for gaming system I'm playstation for life. I still got ps2 3 & 4 and would still have ps1 if it wasn't broke. Hell yeah PS5 come wit it, don't matter if it come out in 2018 or 2019 it will be mine.

The scenario: MS releases scorpio, 4k, 6 terraflops cpu, 1 tb hd, 8 gigs ddr memory.. Sony waits for 1 year or less, then PS5 bust out to the scene with: 8k,resolution, 12 terraflops cpu, 2 tb HD, 16 gigs of memory bamm!!!!!! nuff said.. sony sell 5 x as much ps4's as MS... end of life cycle, start again... rinse , repeat...

I hope the ps5 system will offer a elite controller like the Xbox one system

I would like to see the

I would like to see the Playstation5 in the shelves in 2018 .

I really am hoping for a PS5

I really am hoping for a PS5 in 2018 but I want it all. It should only come out if it takes a big enough step and they have a solid product (which they have so far). Maybe they could create it with a hardware slot so if something new comes up shortly after the put it out, they produce a cheap east upgrade to assets the console. I don't know but I really can't wait for PS5

dose the new game console play 4k movies?

Fully loaded

Stop with the strip club tease. I want the please. PS5 has to double the teraflops of XBOX Scorpio. 12 teraflops of power. Have just new games that are powerfull enough for this new system. If yoy want to play old games have the PS5 come with 300 built-in games. 100 ps2, 100 ps3, and 100 ps4. People Will pay high dollar for a system like that. 4k everything with it. Streaming 4k, gaming 4k, and 4k blue ray cd player. I want my gammig console fully loaded. Make it like a gamming computer and the price like one. It would sale.

Wait for PS5

I bought a used PS3 last year for cheap because PS3 games are dirt cheap. I cannot see paying $60 for a single game and $400 just for a new console. I hope PS5 comes out next year because then can buy a used PS4 Pro and 4k large TV for cheap to catch up on the PS4 exclusives that were not available on the PS3. I had an original XBOX and loved Halo but Sony has better games overall now than Microsoft Xbox!

IF PlayStation 5 does happen, I hope it's Sony's last console. Anymore PlayStation or Xbox consoles, will likely drive consumers away and switch to PC.

PlayStation 5

I'm having fun with my PS4 Pro on my LGB6, I just can't wait for a Next Gen System, PS5 Fall 2018 I hope so.

ps5 come on

i will like to see ps5 in the 2nd half of 2018

no need for ps5 at this time

The ps4 pro is supposed to be a normal ps4 but with some enhancements but the ps4 period shouldn't be over yet as it should be ending in 2020 at least. Every console had a long period for minimum of 10 years. I know that there is the 4k and the tech is getting better and better everyday but the ps4 should take its time till the last breath

If this is true, I would

If this is true, I would prefer wait for Playstation 5 Pro in the spring of 2019 then.

No 2018 is too early for a PS5 release it in 2020. I still need to buy more games for my PS4

In 5 years I would love to see PS 70 the rate they going, they selling u same thing for more money, and you keep buying it. Now that's funny :)

Yessss all games on VR can't wait for it, hope next year we'll see it coming........the XBOX ONE X will die

No, PS5 is not wanted or needed! It is unnecessary.

It would be extremely impractical for it to be released before 2019. They have and average time of 6 years before they are replaced. Also, there are several games that have been planned for the PS4 that have yet to be even developed, let alone translated. FFVII REMAKE RESIDENT EVIL 2 REMAKE YAKUZA 2 REMAKE YAKUZA 3 & 4 PORTS YAKUZA 5 first retail release in the West YAKUZA 6 KINGDOM HEARTS 3 and so on... There is no way we can realistically expect them to all be released in the West on PS4 in the next year and a half.

Too soon

Tons of people just now purchased the ps4 slims or pro, to release ps5 in 2018 would ultimately lead to bad sales due to most people having fresh new ps4s in their houses. It is highly unlikely those people would want to go spend another 4-500 dollars for a new playstation when their slim/pro is brand new, I say atleast wait til 2019 or 2020, and for those of you who demand sony release ps5 by no later than 2018 to keep up with Microsoft. This isn't good because demanding they rush out a console will only lead to a disastrous launch

I need 4k 60fps or at least

I need 4k 60fps or at least 1080p 60fps and when I say 60fps I mean solid 60fps.

Iets hope they release it in 2018 the faster they do it the better cant wait

Ps5?; not yet!

Having done a bit of reading regarding some of the exciting technological advancements that are going to happen over the next couple of years, I would like to see Sony hold back a little while, until they are perhaps able to implement some of this into their new console. Also. I would like Sony to produce a console that is able to proficiently run elder scrolls 6 when it is finally released; an ambitious title (according to Bethesda) which is likely going to require some serious hardware!.

But if we wait til 2019 it would have all the stuff we like. I would like to have fortnight forza horizon 3.

2018 PS5 Release

I want Sony to release the PS5 this year. I don't feel like waiting another 2 or 3 years for a new console.

Well to be honest if the power does not surpass the pro then why even bother don't sell us the same thing twice.

futre and beyond

with the release of the holadeck type gaming system ps is aiming for we can only hope for bigger things then vr in ps5
