PS5 Backwards Compatible

Every time a new console is announced, the first question on everyone’s minds is “will it be backwards compatible?” The fear of a new generation invalidating all of our purchases from the previous one is very real in gamers everywhere. The very structure of the PS4 was completely different than the PS3, which was the basis for why Sony said the PS4 could not be backwards compatible. Even so, they’ve made concessions here and there.

Meanwhile. Microsoft is making more and more Xbox 360 games compatible on the Xbox One every week. Top that off with the announcement of Xbox 2 being backwards compatible, and now Sony’s been backed into a corner. It’s time to bring out the claws and make backwards compatibility a feature on PS5.

No One Gets Left Behind: Microsoft’s Plan For Backwards Compatibility

Let’s start by taking a look at the competition. When the Xbox One was first announced, there was no mention of backwards compatibility. The same was true of PS4. A few years ago at E3, Microsoft dropped the bomb that Xbox 360 games would soon be playable on Xbox One. Since this announcement, they have been steadily adding new titles to the list.

If you own the game on Xbox 360, you can simply pop in the disc and download a version of it for your Xbox One. If you owned it digitally in the past, you can download it again. If you want to buy it for the first time on Xbox One, you can do that too. Xbox 360 games are even being offered as free titles in Games With Gold promotions.

On top of this, Microsoft announced Project Scorpio (Xbox Two) At E3 2016. They went on to say that all of your games and accessories would carry forward to the new system. Microsoft introduced the concept of an Xbox One Family, where all of their games would be playable on Xbox One, Xbox One S, and Project Scorpio/Xbox 2.

In an Interview with Windows Central, Xbox Services GM, Dave McCarthy, was asked if there would be exclusive games for the Xbox 2/Project Scorpio. His reply was this:

”Will there be a range that developers will take advantage of in Scorpio? Absolutely, but again, that’s going to be a developer choice. But, on our devices all of your games are going to work. Period. We made that promise today: those games will work across the whole line-up. They have to work across the whole line-up.”

Microsoft has made it clear that there will be no Scorpio exclusives. That’s a hard pill to swallow, but it’s also a massive promise in terms of backwards compatibility. This kind of sweeping stance on the matter leaves Sony with a choice to make.

Let’s find out what that choice could be.

PlayStation Backwards Compatibility: Past, Present, and Future

The first time we saw backwards compatibility was on the PS2. This system was indeed capable of playing PS1 games, but the caveat was you had to use a memory card from the original system to save your data. You couldn’t save PS2 data on a PS1 memory card.

That being said, there were some PS1 games that could not be played on the PS2. This list changed based on the model of the PS2. When the PS3 released, there were several models.

The 60GB PS3 was fully backwards compatible. The original 80GB model was also compatible through emulation. All other models did not have PS2 compatibility but could still play PS1 games. These systems offered the ability to make an “internal memory card” that could be used to store data from older titles.

Jump to the PS4 and there was zero backwards compatibility at launch. The reason for this had to do with the system’s architecture. The PS3 had a proprietary cell processor that created some phenomenal first-party games, but ultimately alienating most third-party developers.

The PS4 is designed more like a traditional PC for the purpose of welcoming quality experiencing across all developers. This shift in structure was the reasoning behind Sony’s decision to not make the new system backwards compatible.

As time went on, we’ve seen a few workarounds:

1. PlayStation Now

PlayStation Now is the streaming service Sony created after purchasing cloud gaming company Gaikai for $380 million. This service offers users the ability to stream PS3 games to their PS4 or Smart TV via an internet connection, much like Netflix does for video.

The issues with this service are a lack of selection, high costs, and the need for a strong and reliable internet connection. It’s a noble attempt, but it’s never taken off as intended.

2. PS2 Classics

Sony has slowly been figuring out how to make PS2 games playable on the PS4. These titles run at an upscaled 1080p resolution and include trophies. The caveat is that you have to buy them again, regardless of whether your not you own them. Prices usually hover around $14.99, but there are sales from time-to-time.

3. Remastered Releases

Perhaps the most controversial way that Sony has been bringing games forward from the previous generation is through the release of remastered games. Many popular games like The Last of Us, Uncharted, and God of War III have been re-released on PS4 with updated graphics, higher frame rates, and DLC included.

These are a double-edge sword. On the one hand, when done correctly. these new versions are vastly superior. On the other hand, people are essentially paying for the same game twice. Cynical gamers will say that this is the only way we'll see backwards compatibility on the PS5 because it makes Sony money on something twice, but I would argue that there's a place for these remasters.

Certain games shouldn't fade into memory. Some of them deserve to be redone and resold, if only to show a new generation of gamers experiences that shouldn't be missed. I will agree that it's a slippery slope towards cash grabs, but I think Sony knows that remasters are a business model that can only take them so far.

New I.P and new franchises should be the focus, and if E3 2016 is any indicator, Sony hasn't lost sight of that focus in the slightest. Will remasters go away on PS5? No, I don't think so. I do think that Microsoft will force Sony to offer a more comprehensive solution for backwards compatibility, but at the same time I think several of PS4's biggest titles will warrant a refresh on the next generation. It's a balance.

Even so, people aren’t too keen on buying these games again.

So that’s where we stand with backwards compatibility on PS4. With Microsoft going full-steam ahead on a future where games works across all of the platforms currently available, Sony needs to have an answer for gamers who want a more comprehensive solution to the backwards compatibility question.

With the PS4 Neo confirmed, we know that this new “high-end” PS4 is going to play both regular and Neo-enabled PS4 games without issue. We also know that every game that comes out will work on both consoles. This may be a small compatibility victory, but it’s a victory nonetheless.

Sony is clearly taking steps not to fracture the market, and this follows in Microsoft’s footsteps. If Sony could somehow bring PS3 or PS2 into the fold in a more meaningful way, then they could stand on the same ground as Microsoft.

That may not be possible now, but it could be with PS5. At the very least, PS5 will play PS4 games as Sony has never been one to be beaten by Microsoft. It's also clear that gamers don't want to be "left behind" as Microsoft puts it. If they could perfect PlayStation Now and make it more cost-effective, that could be a real solution to the issue of playing PS3 and PS2 games on the new console.

Since it’s clear cloud gaming circumvents the issues around system architecture, I believe Sony will leverage this technology on PS5 to offer native backwards compatibility with PS4 and cloud-streaming for PS3 and PS2. Ideally, by this time they will include such streaming in the cost of PlayStation Plus and not charge for it as an extra service.

Of course, at the end of the day, Sony is here to serve the gamers. Do you want backwards compatibility for the PS5? Make your voice heard in the comments below!

Backwards compatibility

I would like to see the PS5 play all PlayStation games from the PS1, I have a load of games from all previous consoles that I don't play as I don't have the room to set them all up. One console for all the games means less room needed to setup. Come on Sony make buying th PS5 worthwhile.

Must be backwards compat

I love my games and want to continue playing them. Some games aren't popular enough to be made again but they are still my favorite. I agree that Sony needs to get it together and make ps5 play games currently purchased. Probably won't buy a cloud based system because of the continued cost of them. I like to pay for it and be done, not have it be a monthly financial burden. I don't trust the cloud.

Argee

Yes I agree with Jenny , So bring backward capability please (Michal

Backwards Compatibility

I would love to have it on the PS5, just think... Being able to play old classic games on HD 1080p pr at least 780p would be great. The ps2 could play both PS2andPS1 games. PS3 60GB (hard to find) could play all three, and The PS3 80GB could play all three with PS3 Emulation. Now that the PS4 and PS4.5 is here, it only does PS4.. So having to set up every single system up to one tv would be barbaric. You would have to have one of those input selectors and push a button to select which system you want to play. I had the auto one that when you turned on the PS1, PS2, GameCube, Dreamcast, and N64 or Super Nintendo, it was craxy to figure out which is which. I had to label each button so i know which cord went to each one and the tangles in the back were CRAZY not to mention i had a separate power strip just for the systems. So having one system like the PS5 or maybe somehow the PS4 being able to have Backwards Compatibility would be AWESOME!!!!!

PS5

I also still have games from day one. The PS5 should be made to play all games from PS1 to present. If someone would like to purchase a re-mastered version, then they could do so if available. I would buy the PS5 in a heartbeat if I could play every game that I have!

PS5 backwards compatible

I would literally buy 5 consoles priced at $500 even though I have a $1100 gaming PC and don't have the money. That's how excited I would be if they made PS5 backwards compatible with PS1 to present. I would tell all my Xbox loving friends about how superior the console is at that point. The best thing would be if they made an exclusive deal with EVGA to manufacture graphics cards for them for upgradability options. Seriously, though, you can play ps2 and psone games on PC with any controller you want with advanced graphics improvement on all titles. You can hook Crash Team Racing up to four monitors for separate screen four player no screen-cheating action in combined 4k! Its not perfect, but it really does look amazing. PS3 emulation will come some day, but it is very difficult in comparison because of how much more advanced the PS3 was then the PS2.

Yes!

Yes make it compatible! For real, do your research! Google the most simple games back from the ps1 and ps2! For example: Tony Hawk "Underground" was one of the most popular ps2 games around. Everyone has been asking to make the same exact game for other consoles just to keep playing it but they will not make another one! We just want to keep playing whether we have to buy it again or not!

Backwards Compatibility on PS5

Lets beat Microsoft once and for all. Backwards Compatibility for every play station game ever made. Yes most ps1, ps2, and ps3 games could really benefit from better graphics, 1080i , improved audio, game play controls and even VR playing ability. Let's make the PS5 console the best gaming platform ever made. The most powerful processor on the market, 3-5 TRB storage ( why not be able to store every game you own and more, plus your favorite movies to watch with VR abilities), let's plan for the future also. VR is not only going to be big in gaming but also movies, music, tv, and cell phones. Lets add the camera ability, with cell phone service connectivity, Netflix service, roku ability, mlb tv, NFL tv, internet service, Facebook, and Sony would rule the world in the first, "All In One" , gaming, movies, music, cell phone, home entertainment, sports, VR system, and the last system you will ever need. You will have every developer begging to be part of PS5, or as I would call it, Sony Play Station " Complete"

make the PS5 able to play all games

please sony make a console worth buying or using and whack some half decent memory in it too I'm about to upgrade my old PS4 500GB because it doesn't cut it and i wont be spending $559 on the new 1TB console anytime soon, i heard the new playstation is looking around $2000 when it comes out you better make it cheaper or Gamers won't buy it...

bring back backwards compatibility

I didn't buy the ps4 because I couldn't play my ps2 games on it, and I don't want to buy them again, especially since they are all in great condition still. I would love to see Sony bring out something that I can use from my old games and keep up with the new games

Keep customers, go backward compatible.

Went from PS1- PS3. My son wanted to go either PS4. We had over $1500 worth of games just for PS3 alone. Because the PS4 wasn't backward compatible with all his games he decided to just go Xbox 360 as he would have to buy new games anyway. Now he's up to an Xbox one. In effect he has bought 2 new consoles and a ton of games for the MS system that could have gone to Sony. For the price of not having a backward compatible option, Sony lost a customer that now spends on games and consoles. If ALL the new games coming out are only for the new console, you still have to buy that console and that game wanted still making Sony money while keeping customers happy. My 2 cents.

Backwards compatibility with the PS5

I would like to think of myself as an avid gamer and all of my chips are bet on the PS5. The one request I ask of Sony is that the PS5 would be backwards compatible and "the cloud" would not replace actual "disc" games for your loyal customers. I realize we are at a time in technology where it may not be as cost effective to still produce "discs" but, truthfully people like to be able to "hold" what they have purchased. I know that I do. I know you surely do but, please think of your consumer/customer before the release of the PS5 because without them it is all for not. Best regards, Casey Rankin

bring back backward compatible

Hi there , Yes I Agree Play Station 5 should play all of playstation games , So please bring back backward compatible, what I mean when I say compatible is, when you put in PS2 PS3 PS4 games that you bought allready could you put them in your PS5 ,that would be great so would you guys make it happen please (Michal

Backwards compatibility

Defiantly Sony need to make it possible for ps5 to be able to play all previous PlayStation consoles games. Simply by inserting the game disc. I think making people buy the game again is a mega con an unacceptable for such a huge company as Sony. We have all honestly purchased the games for the most current console so why would any 1 want to pay again???

ps5 needs to be backwards Compatible

I have yet to buy a PS4 because of the fact that it is not backwards compatible. There are games that I want to get and my son wants but I am not going to buy a ps4 due to the fact that we have a lot of ps3 and ps2 games that we play as I have the original backwards compatible ps3 and I won't give it up until sony makes a system that will play all the ps1, ps2, ps3 and ps4 games just like how microsoft has done with the xbox one and now the xbox scorpio. i do not want a cloud based, i want it to be able to play the games from the disc because i am not into rebuying games for a system just so they can be played on that particular system. it's simply ridiculous. So the PS5 NEEDS TO BE BACKWARDS COMPATIBLE OR ELSE SONY WILL EVENTUALLY LOSE BUSINESS MICROSOFT! SO LET'S MAKE THE PLAYSTATION 5 THE BEST IT CAN BE BY MAKING IT A TRUE BACKWARDS COMPATIBLE SYSTEM LIKE THE ORIGINAL PLAYSTATION 3!

PS5 Backwards Compatible

I agree that PS5 needs to be backwards compatible I have kept every game that I have bought from the the PS1 days to PS4 Tomb raider is one of the best games I have ever played and I have every title ever made. Would love to be able to play them all again on one console!!! Lets do it Sony!!!!!

Ps5 backwards compatible

It would be benificial for all if Sony will make ps5 backwards compatible since all gamers would like to play all their purchased games in one console. Ps4 has no appeal on me since it has no backwards compatibility not like the ps3. Sony should also understand the feelings of games that when you fell in love with the game its hard to let go of it.

PS5 Backwards compatibility

I have over game titles for the ps3, which i love and have alot of money tied up. When ps3 came out many people thought that this was going to b the best irreplaceable system and the games would b great for a long long time. Then the ps4 was announced to b released soon after and u could not play all the ps3 game titles on it. I have not purchased a ps4 and any games since it release, instead ive switched to xbox 360 and recently bought my son an xbox one because of the backwards compatibility. I always hated xbox and swore never to buy one....now i own 2. Mainly becsuse of thr lower cost and game compatibility. How many other people have done the same thing?? How many will switch?? I think sony is not only missing out but losing customers in popularity which translates to losing money. A fully, across the board backwards compatible system that plays atleast ps3 and ps4 games is a must. Thank you, i hope someone reads this.

PS backward compatibility

Have always been a PS fan but my PS3 just stpppee working and I am looking at having to purchase a new system. I hate the thought of going to Xbox but with their "Xbox family" plan if making all systems compatible I can't see not doing it if Sony doesn't commit to COMPLETE backward compatibility without streaming, extra fees, etc. What's your plan Sony???

Backward compatibility

All new consoles regardless of make it model should come with backward compatibility. This said however I know that the software in some cases cannot be reached to the desired effect to be able to have B/C but surely somewhere in the world emulators and software designers can make this possible on all next ten consoles. Looking forward to a while new experience with the PSi .

PS5 Backwards Compatibility

Make the Ps5 be able to play Ps4 Games, I love all my games and accessories, I live in Portugal and 70% are Sony PlayStation Player, lets beat Microsoft. Yes , we can be 100% Sony PlayStation Player.

Backwards compatibility

Which spent a lot of money on these games. I think that's the new PS five should be backwards compatibility, Microsoft can offer it so compatibility, If Microsoft can offer it should Sony. I for one would not spend anymore money play the Game that like on my PS4 and order just to have a PS five. I would keep my PS4 so I can continue playing the games that I play and not have to worry about spending more money to have the same games that already have. And not buy the ps5. So my request 50 to make it backwards compatibility.

ps5 backwards playback

i would love to see the ps5 play playstation 1, 2 games. i have playstation 2 and 1 systems i would love to upgrade ps5 if it had playback of older titles.bru ray playback would be great as well.

Backwards YES

Nobody is not asking for backwards compatibility if they've ever owned a past play station. Most people are annoyed that you cant go back. Heck.. you can't even play a simple CD rom on the ps4. It's a joke. The next play station needs to have backwards compatibility.. i'll still buy the remastered versions when the graphics have far been expired or if I never really had the games at release.. just. Huge library of ps2 titles I'll likely nevee touch with my ps2 because of how finiky it has become over time.

Playstation 5

Please Make it backwards compatible

Defines the buyer's choice

As with the other comments submitted here, I first branched away from Sony to buy an Xbox 360 due the fact that the PS3 shifted to no longer support PS2 games at the time I ventured into that generation. Had it not, there is no way I would have gone on to buy an Xbox 360. With the PS4 again there was no support, while the Xbox One offered the compatibility to play at least half of my Xbox 360 games, so the decision again was a simple one. If PS5 was to offer support to play my catalogue of PS1 and PS2 games, needless to say it would be my next major console purchase, while I'm sure many PS3/PS4 owners would feel the same.

Ps5

It would be genius to play every game for all playstation games, imagine this: ps4 sold 250,000 in 2 days, ps 5 would sell 1000000 in 1 day it would be a landscape and a huge succes not just for us gamers and fans all over the world but also for the company and please if you create ps6,7,8 etc. Keep the backward compatibility that would be the ace in the whole ;-)

Yes! Backwards Compatibility!

I'm tired of spending my money on games i already have! Sony, do the right thing

It has to be

I was so angry when ps4 didn't play my ps3 games and I shouldn't get charged a monthly subscription to play them. I've been a sony follower for a long time but im tired of buying my favorite games over and over. If Ps5 is not backwards compatible out the gate with at least ps4 games I'm done with Sony.

YES I would love to be able to play all on

PS5 needs to be able to play backwards all games PS, PS2, PS3 & PS4 Games all should be able to work on PS5 that would be Awesome!!! I have PS3 & PS4 but Can not do my PS, PS2 games on them. Help Us Fan Gamers out. Thanks

Go backwards compatible or go in the garbage!

Ive bought PS1, PS2, and we currently own two PS3 backwards compatibles, but i will NEVER BUY A PS4 !!! If sony doesnt come up with a new backwards compatible system, I will go over to the darkside, and be done with Sony and make the move to Xbox..... theres no other choice. I left Nintendo years ago, because I was sick of buying new games, cartridges, mini disks, disks, it was a mess! They screwed me, and its looking like sony is going down that same path. By the time Nintendo got into backwards compat they already lost people like me forever! Now Im starting to fear I should have gone to Xbox instead of buying sony :(

Backwards compatable

I am agreeing with everyone here. I would buy the PS 5 if it runs all the older PS games without having to go on cloud or ps now store or whatever the hell they have just put in the disc and go. I have a retro end and it can play NES SNES and sega all on one console. They should be able to do that with the PS 5. Come on Sony come through for us gamers.

Own a lot of games

I have spent a lot of money on games. I do not believe I should spend money again on the same game ever unless it is for a second console. I have owned every model of PlayStation. My first gaming console was an Atari. Like many people I've been playing a long time. I currently own 55 PS3 game titles alone. I own 2 PS3 consoles and 2 wide screen TVs. I am likely to purchase in the same manor if something is backwards compatible with what I currently own or it is a flat out HUGE ripoff. Hence why would I buy a PS4? A huge reason why people leave this hobby is because of this very fact. No one wants to loose the money they worked so hard to spend. It becomes a waste of time and then begin to think that they could be doing other things. They turn somewhere their investment will last longer and grow. I fear my gaming is about to come to an end because of it. My situation is set up for a great multiplayer experience with several people. I want to continue to promote PlayStation over any other brand. But how can I if I am only going to be loosing my initial investment. Think about keeping YOUR initial investment ....people like me who will show off your product and have continued to be faithful to your brand for decades.

Backwards Full On!

If you don't do this, I won't support any longer. I passed on the PS4. Make the PS5 my dream come true. Thanks.

ps5 must have backwards compatible

there's lots of people who wants to play ps1 ps2 and ps3 games on one console. so sony should make ps5 backwards compatible and also make to play ps1 ps2 and ps3 iso games. because some people don't have disk so it will be better to have iso compatible. i want to play ps2 captain tsubasa iso on ps5. because iso is the best way to play old games and you have to download them from internet. you don't have to put disk on console. so copy the iso games and enjoy playing your old games

Ps1, Ps2, Ps3 and Ps4 Disc Based Backwards Compatibility for ps5

If disc based backwards compatibility for ps1 all the way to ps4 is implemented into the PS5, people will indefinitely buy a ps5, sony if you want to beat microsoft once and for all this is what you have to do, i have a collection of games from ps1 ps2 ps3 and ps4 that i would love to play on ps5 upscaled to 1080p or 4k, please sony make it happen and i will instantly purchase a ps5, and im sure sales will plummet, if there is no backwards compatibility xbox is just gonna keep kicking your butts even though there form of backwards compatibility isnt even worth it, if we can just pop the disc in and play old games on ps5 then i assure you sony people will buy, this is what everyone wants, not streaming services like playstation now which most countries dont even get, and on top of that you need good internet to stream the games at all, make this happen and i will keep on supporting you sony

Yes it must play ps1 and ps2 games.

All my favorite games are ps1 and ps2.I MUST have a way to play these games that bring so much joy to my otherwise meaningless life. After all I paid a great deal for them and want to continue to enjoy them.I will buy any console that plays them. Its a must have.

Backwards compatibility

Would love to see it on the ps5. Hoping that the games i purchased on ps4 will carry over if i decide to get the 5. Which i prob will. Cant wait!!!

Backwards compatible

I will not upgrade from my ps3 unless I can play my ps3 discs on it. Plain and simple. I won't lose the many games I have because I can't play them on a new console.

No backwards compatability

I will leave Sony if ps5 doesn't have it. Simply tired of always having to buy my collection again. So Sony is losing money on people like me since I go for used games and not as many to restock. Xbox 2 is looking more enticing by the day, since I use my game system for everything (dvd/bluray, streaming apps, gaming) all in one.

backwards compatibility

I've always been a huge supporter of Playstation. I've had every system including the current PS4, but the lack of backwards compatibility made me feel like I was being taken advantage of. Why should I pay to stream games I already own? I purchased an Xbox One, and it was probably one of the best decisions I've made all year. It's cool being able to play old and new generations of games on one system. If Sony doesn't make changes it will only be a matter of time before they are left behind. I will never consider another PS system unless backwards compatibility is guaranteed.

im still not deciding to decide

i bought a PS2. then you guys added a computer so i bought the PS3. when you created PS4 i hoped to get the long awaited soul calibur 6 to go along with the new gaming console. didnt happen so i suppose skipping it for PS5s backwards compatibility would be a reason to purchase a new console as long as the consumers aren't ass raped over the price. i usually have to wait a year for a $50 price drop...

Backwards Compatibility

I would like to see the PS5 backwards compatibility. I have a bunch of games that I play. I looked at the picture and it looks so sleek.

Ps5 backwards compatible

Backwards compatible would be great For ps5 , I haven't got a ps4 yet I do have a PS3 also have 150 ps2 games The PS3 is great online call of duty is great no more repetitive gaming trying to get to next level and keep repeating over and over till you get through to go to next level online is always differant ,anyways, one issue I have is PS3 controllers malfunctioning , and can't afford a new one I have 6 that don't work so buying a new one just to break again for $50 just not happening.so I play with half broken controller, and don't play as Mutch anymore, backwards compatible would be great for a ps5 , put an extra processor or adapter card like a PC , make a ps5 with slots on the board and sell adapter cards or built in for each lower PlayStation maybe Evan a second disc drive if there's a problem reading all in same,in closing I'm getting a ps4?asap just there aren't that many games, it's like build up a library and can't use it ,I would get a ps5 if it where compatible backwards, it a toss up .the old game systems are cheep so playing my 150 ps2 games consoles are cheep, I think game makers need to make newer versions of games more games call of duty !!! I new version of an old game made new for new system backwards compatible is great when your system breaks and you can buy a new system still play your existing games while earning money to get newer games , whatever you do Sony make the controllers stronger or less expensive, 1/2 the price as they are now,I love your systems ,I have Xbox and Xbox 360 it's wierd I don't play them 1 reason PS3 I have wi-fi I just turn on the system I'm on line Xbox u have to buy something #1 reason#2 it seams to be harder to play the Xbox games with there controllers , PlayStation will always rule over Microsoft ,Sony don't be pressured by Microsoft , just build a good strong well made system, and don't rush it out in a hurry, take your time

I want the ps5 to be able to

I want the ps5 to be able to play all ps1 games . All ps2 games . All ps3 games and all ps4 games
